Gallery Guides
Teachers who wish to have students complete an activity during their visit may download and copy our gallery worksheets, or ask a member of the education staff to provide copies upon arrival. The worksheets reinforce what students have studied in the classroom, enhance their learning at the Museum, and provide teachers with a post-visit assessment tool. Although the worksheets were designed for older students, both high school and middle school teachers have found them to be a valuable resource.

Women Marines
Women Marines, posterThousands of American women have proudly claimed the title of United States Marine since Opha Mae Johnson´s enlistment in 1918. Today, Women Marines comprise about 6% of the active duty force and are eligible for service in nearly all occupational fields. Although women are restricted from engaging in offensive combat, they serve with honor and courage alongside their male counterparts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Museum’s education department has developed a fun and educational activity page to teach children about some of the accomplishments of Women Marines. Please download and copy the file below, or ask the education staff to provide copies when you arrive at the Museum.

Navajo Code TalkersNavajo Code Talkers
The Navajo Code Talkers were a group of Native Americans who served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Their mission was to send and receive secret coded messages that the enemy could not understand. The job of these brave Marines was critical to the American victory over Japan. This was especially true on the island of Iwo Jima, scene of some of the most brutal fighting during World War II. In fact, one Marine officer said: “Were it not for the Navajo, the Marines would have never taken Iwo Jima.”

Students can complete the worksheet below as they view the Code Talkers exhibit in the Museum’s World War II Gallery.
