EDUCATION
Scheduling an educational visit with the National Museum of the Marine Corps provides educators an excellent opportunity to share the history of the United States Marine Corps with their students. Since Marines have served all over the globe since 1775 the history of the Marine Corps extends beyond the boundaries of the United States. The Museum allows students to see how United States Marines have affected people and events throughout history. Your students will actually experience historical events through the immersive exhibits. They will be airlifted into the “hot” landing zone at Hill 881 South near Khe Sanh in Vietnam on a CH-46 helicopter. Rotor wash swirls the hot air, and the sounds of combat will surround them as they step off the helicopter’s rear deck. They will learn about the Battle for Iwo Jima in a WWII ship’s briefing room before boarding a Higgins Boat for the perilous trip to the beach. Motion, sound, and video provide a realistic experience. The National Museum of the Marine Corps brings to life what your students read about in their text books.
Educational Visit Information
The National Museum of the Marine Corps is designed to be an immersive, self-paced, self-guided experience. We do not offer individual or group tours. Our docents are stationed at posts throughout the Museum and are trained to provide additional information as requested. We ask that you divide your students into groups of 10-12 with at least one adult for each group.
Scheduling An Educational Visit
The first step to schedule an educational visit is to submit a reservation form. Once you have submitted your reservation form and it has been processed, you will receive an email confirmation with a Welcome Packet attached. Processing your reservation can take 24-48 hours. The Welcome Packet includes information on eating at the Mess Hall or Tun Tavern as well as pre- and post-visit educational resources. Two weeks before your visit, you will receive a reminder email or phone call. Upon arrival at the museum please sign in at the information desk. After your visit, you will receive a survey. Please take a moment to complete the survey and mail it back so that we can constantly improve our education program. If you need immediate confirmation please contact the Program Assistant at 703-965-3198 or USMCMuseum@yahoo.com.
